Beefeater

Video

Beefeater was an American post-hardcore band from late 1984 until 1986. Formed by Tomas Squip, Fred “Freak” Smith, Dug E. Bird (Birdzell) and Bruce Atchley Taylor, they were pioneers of the post-hardcore genre and the Revolution Summer which took place in the Washington D.C. hardcore in the mid-’80s with similar bands like Embrace, Rites of Spring and Gray Matter, among others. Their debut LP, Plays for Lovers was released in 1985 on the Dischord and their follow-up House Burning Down was released in 1986, as their farewell LP. Drummers Mark “Two-Chair” Shellhaas and Kenny Craun replaced Taylor on later albums. Squip and Birdzell went on to form Fidelity Jones, while Craun joined the Rhythm Pigs.

While Beefeater’s songs had all the angry energy of its hardcore labelmates the energy was channelled as much through funk and jazz as rock and roll. Dug E. Bird’s fast-paced bass slap drives a rhythm section over which Fred “Not Sonic” Smith’s guitar rides in a way reminiscent of the Minutemen. House Burning Down saw the incorporation of even more non-punk influences, most notably world music and included musical cameos many of the Dischord Records regulars (Ian MacKaye provides an intro to the album, in addition to some saxophone). The EP on the Olive Tree label, was more straight-ahead, sounding a bit more like a Caribbean flavoured Gang of Four meets The Fall.

Saetia

Video

Saetia (pronounced sigh-eigh-shee-ahh) was a New York City-based screamo/post-hardcore band. Their name originates from a misspelling of the Miles Davis track “Saeta”, from his album Sketches of Spain, which, in turn, was named after the saeta, a religious tradition of flamenco music. (This is similar to fellow screamo band Joshua Fit For Battle, whose name was a corruption of the traditional American spiritual song “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho”; other members of Saetia later formed Off Minor, which is the title of a Thelonious Monk composition.)

Saetia had numerous members throughout its existence, with frequent changes in membership. The band’s first bass player, Alex Madara, was affected by a severe allergic reaction which placed him into a coma for eight days, finally resulting in his death on 1998-12-14.

Their drummer, Greg Drudy, was the original drummer of the indie-rock band Interpol prior to their current popularity. He currently runs the record label Level Plane. Other members of the band continued their musical careers in numerous outfits, some of them joining screamo bands such as Off Minor, Hot Cross, and The Fiction, as well as the nu-metal band Instruction.

Saetia’s final, posthumous single, “Eronel” (also a title of a Thelonious Monk composition) was released under the Witching Hour label in 2000. The single contains three songs recorded by Steve Roche and mixed by Pat Kenneally.
